I am looking for an intelligent software package that will allow me to setup predefined rules of motion tracking. I would like to setup a camera on the outside of my house and only start recording if a person is walking in a specific direction around the house. The camera will be placed in the back corner of our yard and will overlook the back yard and most of our house.

I want the camera to detect if someone is walking from the side of the house around to our back door. If this happens, I want an alarm triggered by which I am notified by an audible alarm and the software starts recording. This should limit the needless recording and alarms of moving trees and other unimportant motion.

I hear I need a video analytic or video analysis software.

Can anyone recommend a good affordable software package which will do what I need?

I was considering setting up network cameras but I hear they are a pain to deal with. Is that true? If so, I will be using CCTV.

IP Network Cameras are easy to use, some can be hard to setup but most are fairly easy to install. Do you have any networking experience? If you know basic networking, you should be fine. I know of many people who are not computer inclined who have installed IP network cameras.

CCTV is another option as well. When you find a software that does what you need, I would ask them what works better with their software, CCTV or IP.

Check out the software companies on this page http://www.videoanalytics.net/solutions.html as they offer video analytics software which will do what you need.
