Intelligent IP Camera Overview
Intelligent IP Cameras are the next generation in IP Network Video Security. Not only do you have the advantages of video over IP but you also have the intelligent video surveillance capability of having built-in embedded video analytics.
Intelligent IP Cameras allow you to effectively monitor your home or business without the need to be watching the IP camera 24/7. The embedded video analytics in the IP camera automatically monitors the video by watching for motion detection, object recognition and many other security threats.
Every Intelligent IP Camera is different so be sure to check the specifications of each camera to see which IP camera will do what you want.

What is an IP Camera?
An IP Camera is a security camera with a built-in computer allowing it to run stand-alone without the need to be connected to another computer. IP Cameras are used in basic home surveillance solutions to high level complex corporate security monitoring. With an IP Camera, you can monitor your home or business and recording directly from your IP Camera across the Internet to a remote location. The IP Camera does not require itself to be connected to a computer to operate but instead just needs an Internet connection within its IP network.
An IP Camera is very similar to a web cam but offers many more features and as mentioned before, does not require a PC to run. A web cam requires a USB connection to a computer and the computer must always be on. An IP Camera only requires itself to be attached to a running network where it will run standalone.
IP Camera Benefits
- Record video directly from the IP Camera to a remote location over the Internet.
- An IP Camera does not require a PC to operate.
- An IP Camera can be accessed over the Internet to view live video and snapshots.
- IP Cameras offer several built-in features such as motion detection, email/FTP snapshots and remote pan/tilt/zoom.
- Wireless IP Cameras use less cables and allow for easier installations such as outdoors or hard to reach places.
- Record from an IP Camera directly to your PC.
- Some IP Cameras offer the ability to record directly to a built-in SD memory card.
Intelligent IP Cameras VS. Standard IP Cameras
- An Intelligent IP Camera offers intelligent motion detection whereas a standard IP Camera offers basic motion detection on pixel change.
- Intelligent IP Cameras can track objects, recognize objects, follow motion and check for unwanted or missing objects. Standard IP Cameras cannot.
- Intelligent IP Cameras still offer remote recording, remote access and computerless installations.
- An Intelligent IP Camera has the video analytics software embedded into its processor whereas an IP Camera would require the video analytics software to be installed on a PC.
- An Intelligent IP Camera offers the ability to only send video over the network when an alarm is triggered lowering network bandwidth. A standard IP camera sends video across the network 24/7.
- When installations require multiple IP Cameras, Intelligent IP Cameras offer the ability to only show video when an alarm is triggered. This allows for less security staff to be monitoring all the IP Cameras at once.
